Franklin's Leaf Season Is Coming. Get Your Books Ready Before the Rush

If you run a business in Franklin, you already know what's coming. Once the leaves start turning in the Nantahala and the Smokies, this town fills up. Traffic on Main Street picks up. Parking gets harder to find. For a lot of local businesses, the next couple of months are the busiest and the most profitable of the whole year.

That makes late August the right time to get your books in order. Before the rush hits. Before there's no time to look at anything but the register and the line out the door.

Why This Window Matters

Fall tourist season means a fast jump in revenue for shops, restaurants, outfitters, and anyone who depends on visitor traffic. That's good news for cash flow. It also means more transactions to track and more receipts to hold onto, with less time to deal with any of it once things get busy. Getting caught up now means you're not trying to piece together August's numbers back in November, when you're already buried in October and September.

A few weeks of prep now can save you a full weekend of catch-up later. That trade is almost always worth it.

Don't Let the Cash Flow Fool You

A strong season can feel like a windfall in the moment. The deposits look good, the register stays busy, and it's easy to let that cash flow blur into just being yours to spend. But a real chunk of that seasonal income is going to be owed back out, in sales tax, in income tax, in whatever your business normally sets aside. Setting money aside as it comes in, rather than figuring it out after the season ends, is one of the simplest things you can do to avoid a rough surprise come tax time.

Sales Tax on a Seasonal Spike

A busy season changes your sales tax picture too. If your revenue jumps during leaf season, it's worth checking that your sales tax collection and filing can handle the increase, especially if you're close to any registration or filing frequency thresholds. This is easy to overlook when you're focused on just keeping up with customers.

Seasonal Staff, If You're Hiring

Plenty of Franklin businesses bring on extra help for the fall rush. If that's you, now's the time to get your payroll setup ready, whether that's proper paperwork for a new hire or just making sure your system can handle a bigger headcount without scrambling. A little bit of setup now means payday doesn't turn into a fire drill once you're three weeks into the season.

Tracking Cash and Card Split

Tourist-heavy businesses often see a different mix of cash and card payments than they do the rest of the year. Make sure your records are catching both accurately. Cash is the easiest thing to lose track of when the shop is full and you're moving fast. It's also the piece most likely to cause a headache later if it wasn't recorded well in the moment.

Take Notes as You Go

If something feels off during a busy week, a return that seems bigger than usual, a payment that didn't get logged right, write it down when it happens. It's a lot easier to fix a mistake the same week than to go hunting for it in January when the season is long over and the details have faded.

A Little Prep Now Saves a Headache in January

The businesses that come out of leaf season in good shape are usually the ones that went into it with clean books. Not perfect books. Just current ones. If yours has fallen behind, or you just want a quick check before things pick up, now's the time to do it, while there's still a little breathing room on the calendar.
